Reluctantly Upgrading to iOS 8

My phone had always been jailbroken, and I was quite dependent on a few “pirated” apps, so I never upgraded to iOS 8. Recently, after seeing some new features on my wife’s iOS 8 phone, I finally couldn’t resist and upgraded my phone last Sunday night.

I proceeded with the upgrade with the intention of jailbreaking it again. Early in the morning, I prepared the PP Jailbreak Assistant, then backed up, flashed the system, and jailbroke it. Unfortunately, the worst happened. First, the backup couldn’t be fully restored. Since the previous system was jailbroken, many apps could only be installed after jailbreaking, so I had to jailbreak first to restore those apps. Second, after using the Pangu jailbreak, I encountered the “white apple” screen repeatedly when installing plugins from Cydia. Even without installing plugins, restoring the backup with the jailbreak assistant after jailbreaking also resulted in the white apple screen. Third, when I separately copied out the photos and imported them back into the phone, all the videos couldn’t be played, and the photo order and folder distribution were completely messed up. It’s beyond frustrating.

After multiple white apple incidents, I was too exhausted to continue and had to give up on jailbreaking. I prioritized saving the photo album and photos, and had to start over with other apps.

The jailbroken apps I mentioned are mainly for office use, such as CamScanner, wireless printing, and PDF editors. The genuine versions are just too expensive. For example, CamScanner costs 30 yuan per month, which is beyond what I can afford, so I had to resort to pirated versions.

The cost of not jailbreaking is losing about 800MB of PDF documents, mostly meeting notes and work documents from the past few months. Fortunately, most important documents were promptly sent out via email and backed up on my computer, otherwise the loss would have been significant.

Learning from this lesson, I’ll have to slowly get used to not jailbreaking. But I still need various functionalities, so I searched the App Store and found a few apps with decent features and reasonable prices to use as substitutes. Overall, as long as it doesn’t affect work and life efficiency, it’s fine.

If this were a few years ago, I would have definitely insisted on jailbreaking no matter what. But now I understand a bit more that if something can be solved with money, it’s better not to waste time on it. Free time is more precious than money.
