Take a look at Yu Qiuyu’s Tencent Weibo!
At 10:20 AM on April 20, Mr. Yu Qiuyu opened an account on Tencent Weibo. Within just a few minutes, nearly 1,000 people followed him. However, most people became aware of his presence due to the widespread reposting of his few Weibo posts by netizens.
So far, Mr. Yu has only broadcasted three messages on Tencent Weibo:
- Hello everyone! I am Yu Qiuyu.
- In the past, it was easy to label things in the cultural sphere as culture, but poetry, prose, painting, and music are clearly far from sufficient.
- What is culture? It is the spiritual values and lifestyle that have become habits.
All three messages were sent within a couple of minutes, after which they were drowned in a sea of netizens’ criticisms.
According to insiders, within just one day, as many as 370 users reported Yu Qiuyu. Considering that the number of Tencent Weibo beta testers is still quite limited, it can be said that the platform is still in a niche mode. For a while, “reporting Yu Qiuyu” became a hot topic on Tencent Weibo. A quick glance at Sina Weibo also revealed that many netizens quickly issued calls to action, urging others to go to Tencent Weibo and report him. What does this phenomenon signify?
Personally, I have been deeply influenced by Mr. Yu. During my middle school years, I read his six most famous essay collections: Cultural Bitter Journey, Frosty Cold River, Boundless Journey, Mountain Residence Notes, A Thousand Years’ Sigh, and Borrow My Life. My middle school essays were often modeled after his prose style, and I have quoted his articles and sentences countless times.
Particularly, Boundless Journey inspired countless distant dreams during my youth. Although I had also read Breaking the Sky to Tease Qiuyu by Mr. Jin Wenming, the editor-in-chief of Yaowen Jiaozi, which detailed numerous factual, historical, and textual errors in Yu’s Cultural Bitter Journey and other books, I never imagined things would come to this. It’s truly hard to watch.
After searching extensively on Tencent Weibo and Sina Weibo, I gathered some useful information, which I will quote below without further comment:
Li Heng reposted: #Yu Qiuyu# Yu Qiuyu modestly calls himself a literati, but in reality, he has the mind of a politician. Throughout his life, he has been an opportunist, never suffering any losses. His great work Cultural Bitter Journey shows that he neither knows nor cares to know what true hardship is. He has spent his life trying to become a powerful politician.
Guagua: Many people are reporting #Yu Qiuyu#. Did he offend you, owe you money, kill your father, or steal your wife? He hasn’t done anything to hinder you, so why are you so intent on destroying him? I’m neither a fan nor a hater of Yu, and I haven’t read his books. I just can’t stand those who are even more disgusting and pretentious.
Harmonious Entertainment: (Repost) #Yu Qiuyu# has joined Tencent Weibo, and I finally got to use the “report” function. I just reported his post “What is culture? It is the spiritual values and lifestyle that have become habits,” selecting “Other” as the reason and writing “Too pretentious” in the report description.
Xu Xiaotong: Idiocy is the yo-yo of the vulgar, and vulgarity is the primary productive force. #Yu Qiuyu#
Wuyue Sanren: Yu Qiuyu actually opened a Weibo account… This is probably a classic case of not knowing when to quit.
Small Eyes: Friend A: Let’s go to Tencent Weibo! Friend B: What’s so fun about that? Friend A: Dude! There is! Go to Tencent Weibo and report Yu Qiuyu for fun!
Zhanjiang Evening News Third Generation: It’s said that Yu Qiuyu has been reported 374 times on Tencent…
tyzhe: #Tencent Weibo# I can’t believe Yu Qiuyu is on Tencent Weibo. This shows how little Tencent values me. To let this person experience Tencent Weibo beta testing with me. Oh heavens!
Big Bowl of Porridge: @Wangxi is here: Yu Qiuyu has joined Tencent Weibo, and I finally got to use the “report” function. I just reported him, selecting “Other” as the reason and writing “Too pretentious” in the report description.
Huang Xiaosu has self-harmonized: The first thing I did upon entering Tencent Weibo was to respond to the masses and report Yu Qiuyu.
Qing Xiaobie: Yu Qiuyu said Borrow My Life was his final work, but now we have I Can’t Wait Anymore; Edison Chen once said he would permanently retire from the Hong Kong entertainment industry, but he continues to linger amidst controversy. I say, I love Yu Qiuyu. But only “once upon a time.”
Jian Chengliang: Yu Qiuyu in dialogue with “the dead” 2010-4-21 The controversial scholar Yu Qiuyu The 20th National Book Trade Fair will be held in Chengdu on the 24th. Yesterday, it was revealed that a highlight of this year’s fair is the controversial scholar Yu Qiuyu’s new book I Can’t Wait Anymore, a long-form memoir released seven years after Borrow My Life. Yu Qiuyu writes about his family history. Despite becoming a shareholder, Yu Qiuyu has not stopped writing…
Southern Media Network: Yu Qiuyu registered a “Weibo” account on a certain website yesterday and posted three Weibo messages. Within just five hours, over 3,000 Weibo users “gathered around” to watch. Some netizens urged Yu Qiuyu to donate to the Qinghai earthquake disaster area as soon as possible. The official Weibo of Modern Express commented: “Celebrities are donating one after another, and netizens are missing Yu Qiuyu…” http://sinaurl.cn/hnQrr
Zhang Jingchun: Today’s keyword is “report.” Let’s go report Yu Qiuyu on Tencent. Have you reported today?
Another Perspective: Poor Mr. Yu Qiuyu, netizens are tearfully reporting him. //@Zhuang Dikun: Mr. Yu Qiuyu says this account is fake. However, this does not hinder him from signing an exclusive agreement with Tencent.
@Wuyue Sanren: Saying that Yu Qiuyu is courting death by opening a Weibo account, someone actually said it’s a case of “literati looking down on each other.” Fuck, Master Yu is a literati, but I’m not some literati. Is this kind of stupid literati worth my disdain? Given the choice between kissing Sister Feng or looking down on Master Yu, I’d choose the former. Brothers, I just can’t stand seeing idiots. Greater Than the Weak-Minded: I remember after the Sichuan earthquake, Master Yu Qiuyu said: The victims should continue to feel this kind of emotion. After hearing this, I felt deeply ashamed. Emotions built on death are a disregard for life. Such emotions are temporary, but the harm to the families is permanent. No parent would want their child’s life to be exchanged for noble emotions.
Starlight 4th Generation: On June 10, 2009, Yu Qiuyu, through the Jiujiu Readers Company, issued a statement on his blog: The 200,000 yuan donation will be used for the construction of libraries in three schools in Dujiangyan. In response, Beijing Literature editor Xiao Xialin stated that Yu Qiuyu could not provide receipts from relevant departments or the names of the donated units, implying a fake donation. According to media reports, the Sichuan Provincial Civil Affairs Bureau, Charity Federation, and three other donation institutions have no record of Yu Qiuyu’s donation.
